  • Waldemere Fire Station Upstairs Classroom

Our March meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 14th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Upstairs Classroom at the Waldemere Fire Station.  The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. for those who wish to socialize before the meeting begins.

Jennie Baas will be the speaker for the meeting. Jennie began weaving in 1992 and began teaching in her hometown of Davenport, Iowa, in 1993.  After learning how to weave her first basket, she joined the local basket guild in her home community.  With them, she expanded her skills, both as a basket weaver and weaving instructor.  She has taught at various conventions in Iowa and Illinois. She is currently teaching in Florida at The Artful Giraffe, Suncoast Technical College/ACE (Adult Community Enrichment), Art Center Manatee, and private parties.

In creating baskets, Jennie operates from the belief that the "items we use in everyday life should be beautiful, as well as functional."

On Play Day being held on March 26, 2017, she will be teaching the the Potluck Market Basket and the Tropical Storm Collin (TSC).

The Potluck Market Basket is 10" by 10" and is a good basket for the beginner or person who hasn't woven a basket in a while!  It covers all of the basic steps for weaving splint baskets and is a really functional size.

The Tropical Storm Collin (TSC) is 5" in diameter and 5 3/4" tall.  This basket is for the more experienced weaver.  It has multiple types of continuous weave, with a distinctive twill in the middle.

For both baskets, Jennie will have color choices available on Play Day.  The cost of the workshop is $10 and the kit cost for either basket is $25.

If you have a partially finished basket that you need to finish, bring it and Jennie will try to help you complete your project!

Some basket weaving tools will be available for use during Play Day, but it would be helpful if you bring a small pruner/scissors, a flat head screw driver or table knife, a spray bottle, a ruler and pencil, a wash basin or bucket to soak the reed, a dish towel, and clothes pins.

If you have any questions, you can contact Jennie directly at limetreebaskets@gmail.com or by calling
