Silicone Molds

Brooke Andrews is our instructor for Play Day on May 28th and will be teaching us how to make one part press moldusing silicone (with cornstarch or Vaseline as a releasing agent), which was demonstrated at the May meeting.  The molds are great for reproducing jewelry, buttons, knobs, fan pulls, figures, doll heads and hands, bits and pieces to attach to wall art, and for greeting cards.

Brooke will have kits for sale for $25.00 that will include supplies you will need to set up your own mold making studio and a basic color of Polymer Clay to practice making objects from the molds.  If you choose to bring your own Polymer Clay, please make sure it is well conditioned.  There will be an assortment of molds available for you to use on Play Day.

Mold Kit:

  • Bucket
  • Vaseline
  • Dawn Soap
  • Shower Curtain
  • Nitrile gloves (blue)
  • Cornstarch
  • Caulking gun
  • Polymer/paper clay
  • Silicone GE All Purpose #1 100% Silicone
  • Paring knife
  • Stiff brush for Vaseline
  • Needle Tool

Criteria for items to mold:

Item should be smaller than your first, so you will have enough silicone for several molds.

Item should not have undercuts, so they can be pulled out of the mold when it has cured.

Item will be covered with cornstarch or Vaseline, so do not use anything that is precious to you.

If you can't find anything at home, take a trip to the thrift stores and see what treasures you can find.

Items to bring from home:

Little scissors (curved finder nail scissors are best)

Hand towel or paper towels

Wooden spoon if you have trouble pressing with your hand due to arthritis

Several Items to use for mold making.
